The Frostveil Breach
The Frostveil Breach is the easternmost section of The Starshard Traverse, descending from the Starshard into the Magical Wood of near Ft. Auir. Named for the icy fog that clings to the cliffs and the veil-like shimmer of magical energy in the air, this section is where the influence of Selvaoscura becomes undeniable. The path widens slightly but grows more chaotic as the natural and magical forces of the wilderness take over. Fey creatures sometimes confront travelers asking them to prove they mean no harm to the magical forest.
Geography and Features:
- Length: About 25 miles, taking 1-2 days to traverse.
- Terrain: The path descends through a series of switchbacks, with frost-covered rocks and glowing, bioluminescent plants. Pockets of wild magic create strange phenomena, like floating stones or patches of warped gravity and uncommon magical beasts.
- Weather: Dense, icy fog (the “frostveil”) reduces visibility to 20 feet and muffles sound. Unnatural auroras light the sky at night often disorienting travelers
- Magical Influence: The air hums with energy, and faint whispers echo off the rocks. Wild magic surges are common here, especially when spells are cast.
Dangers:
- Illusionary Paths: The magic of The Selvaoscura creates false trails that lead to cliffs or dead ends. A skilled survivalist is often needed to stay on the right path.
- Arcane Wraiths: Spectral entities roam the mountains alongside the Breach. They often stay away from the path itself but are sometimes drawn to spellcasters. They drain magical energy and are thought to be immune to non-magical weapons.
- Gravity Wells: Pockets of warped gravity can double a traveler’s jump distance (but risk overshooting a ledge) or halve their speed.
